ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR THIS DESIGN
Currently Documented Version Characteristics:
Version I: [no signature] [no seal] [no title-caption in lower margin] (example above)

Design History:
The designs of the supplemental set are greatly simplified images typically of the same kinds of plants illustrated in the main series. The plants are shown as two primary silhouettes accented with highlight colors, one as an overlay on the other. One of these silhouettes (usually the backgrounded one) copies the composition of a particular main series design.

In wfx8 a silhouette of the entire dahlia composition of wf39 is used as the background image, and the background itself is left uninked. The overlay image for wfx8 uses a species not otherwise represented in any other designs in the series.

The wfx8 design is printed in three colors: the background silhouette in very pale gray; the overlay silhouette (and accents on the background silhouette) in dull brick-red; and additional highlights only on the overlay in black. The overlay printing is partially translucent, and the underprinted color of the background shows through. These overlapping areas of color demonstrate that both parts were printed as complete (and independent) silhouettes.

Species Illustrated:
Background: Dahlia, Dahlia hybrid cultivars

Overlay: Spiderwort, Tradescantia sp.
