Design History:
Unusually for the supplemental set, the overlay image for wfx9 is the same species used for the backround image. A silhouette of the entire dahlia composition of wf38 is used as the background image, and the background itself is left uninked. Although the overlay image appears at first to be an entirely new dahlia composition, one of the bud spikes is very similar to one in wf33.
The wfx9 design is printed in three colors: the background silhouette in very light gray; the overlay silhouette (and accents on the background silhouette) in pale blue-gray; and additional highlights only on the overlay in black. The overlay printing is partially translucent, and the underprinted color of the background shows through. These overlapping areas of color demonstrate that both parts were printed as complete (and independent) silhouettes.
